Collage is an art form that is created from a variety of materials, colors, textures, etc. It became a thing in modern art when Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque coined the term collage itself in the early 20th century. Over the years, collage has taken up different forms which include photomontage, digital collage, wood collage, mosaic, and eCollage.
Magazine and newspaper cut-outs, paint, ribbons, photographs, shrapnels of other artworks, and random objects are some of the limitless inclusions of traditional collage art. These are most oftenly seen in scrapbooks where photo prints are glued to the pages and arranged in random sequences along with other materials.
In the context of illustration, collage is popularly used as a technique in children’s picture books, magazines, and other print and digital media.
Self-taught illustrator from Brussels, Belgium, Raphael Vicenzi inspires with his modernist, avant-garde collage art illustrations. His works have a rich texture to them, giving off a livelier, more decoupage feel albeit the modest use of color. He has done work for a number of clients including the Washington Post, Virgin, Hemisphere, Style.com, Be Magazine, Votre Beaute, Madame Figaro, and Company UK among some others.

Most of his main subjects are females in portrait form, with which he incorporates use of typography, illustrations/images of animals, foliage, and gradient splashes of color that add contrast to the otherwise black, grey, and white work. Basic line and circle patterns also make regular appearances in his art.
Raphael says his art is mainly inspired by ‘life, art, fashion, collage, street art, graphic design, loud music… ‘
These collage sets are his most recent works in year 2015, with elements of pop-inspired statements in crisp typography and casual scribbles. In this set, he used a pastel/bubblegum color palette for accents.
